What’s the Difference Between EMSCULPT NEO® and CoolSculpting® Elite?

EMSCULPT NEO® and CoolSculpting® Elite are two of the most popular body contouring treatments available, each rising in popularity among both women and men year after year. Although they have some similarities, EMSCULPT NEO and CoolSculpting each offer its own set of benefits. Learn more about each of these popular body contouring treatments to help you decide which one could be the best fit for you, or if a combination of both EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting might be right.

What Is EMSCULPT NEO?

EMSCULPT NEO is the latest version of EMSCULPT, an FDA-approved non-surgical muscle toning device that uses high-intensity electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology. These HIFEM pulses work to deliver supramaximal muscle contractions, which are beyond what would be possible to achieve through exercise alone. The result is a sleeker, more toned physique with no surgery or downtime required.

What sets EMSCULPT NEO apart from its predecessor is the addition of radiofrequency energy to the proven HIFEM technology to increase its muscle-building and fat-reducing ability. EMSCULPT NEO can deliver the equivalent of 24,000 crunches in a single session, helping you achieve both muscle-toning and fat-reducing goals more quickly and efficiently.

While you may notice immediate results right after your EMSCULPT NEO appointment, expect your final results to develop within about three months of completing your treatment. Most people see the best results after two to four EMSCULPT NEO treatment sessions.

What Is CoolSculpting Elite?

CoolSculpting Elite uses the most advanced CoolSculpting technology to freeze and remove stubborn fat in areas like your hips, waist, thighs, back, arms, and jawline. While both CoolSculpting Legacy and CoolSculpting Elite use a process called cryolipolysis to eliminate unwanted fat without surgery or downtime, there are several extra benefits that only CoolSculpting Elite can offer.

All CoolSculpting Elite devices have two applicators, essentially cutting your treatment time in half, compared to CoolSculpting Legacy devices with only one applicator. Additionally, CoolSculpting Elite machines come with seven applicator options that range in size and shape to more precisely target stubborn fat in nine specific areas of the body. This advancement, combined with its new C-shaped applicator, makes CoolSculpting Elite more effective and efficient than its predecessor.

Most people see optimal CoolSculpting results after one to three CoolSculpting Elite treatment sessions, with final results developing around three months after completing your full treatment.

EMSCULPT vs. CoolSculpting: What’s the Difference?

Both EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting can offer excellent body contouring results without the need for surgery or extensive downtime. However, there are a few notable differences between the two devices.

1.   Different body-sculpting goals

In general, the goal of EMSCULPT is to tone underlying muscle structure to achieve a sleeker and more muscular-looking physique. CoolSculpting, on the other hand, is aimed at reducing unwanted fat in areas where exercise-resistant fat tends to accumulate, despite your best efforts in the gym.

Thus, the best body contouring treatment option for you will largely depend on your goals and natural body shape and type. Those who are looking for a more toned look could be great candidates for EMSCULPT, while those who want to trim stubborn fat could be better suited for CoolSculpting. If both of these goals are important to you, a combination of EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting treatment might be right for you.

2.   Different treatment areas

EMSCULPT NEO is currently FDA-cleared to treat the abdominal area, buttocks, arms, thighs, and calves. CoolSculpting Elite is FDA-cleared to treat the submental (under the chin) area, jawline, abdomen, love handles, bra fat, back fat, upper arms, thighs, and “banana rolls” under the buttocks.

Depending on your focus areas, EMSCULPT, CoolSculpting, or a combination of both treatments could be an appropriate body contouring solution for you.

3.   Different maintenance requirements

EMSCULPT may require more initial treatment sessions than CoolSculpting to achieve the desired result, depending on a number of factors, such as your natural body shape and condition and the size and number of treatment areas.

EMSCULPT also generally requires more frequent maintenance treatments than CoolSculpting, in addition to lifestyle adjustments to help prolong your results. Just as your muscles gradually weaken once you quit working out, your EMSCULPT results can gradually fade over time. Maintaining healthy eating and exercise habits is the best way to optimize both EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting results.

Similarities Between EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting

Despite their differences, EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting do have plenty in common as well:

  • Both EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting are effective, non-invasive body contouring treatments that don’t require surgery or extensive downtime.
  • Both are aimed at helping you achieve your fitness goals and fine-tuning your workout results.
  • Both work best when you are able to come as close as possible to reaching your target weight prior to treatment.

Benefits of Combining EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting

EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting have the perfect balance of similarities and differences, making them excellent as a combination body contouring treatment for even more comprehensive results than either treatment on its own.

If both muscle toning and fat reduction are important fitness goals for you, consider pairing EMSCULPT NEO with CoolSculpting Elite to achieve both distinct goals at the same time. Additionally, you might consider combining EMSCULPT with CoolSculpting if you have multiple treatment areas you’d like to address simultaneously. Even better still, because neither of these treatments requires downtime, you’ll find that they easily fit into a busy schedule any time of year.

Could EMSCULPT or CoolSculpting Be Right For You?

EMSCULPT NEO and CoolSculpting Elite can be appropriate body contouring options for most men and women who are in good physical and mental health and are looking for some extra help achieving their fitness goals. Keep in mind that these treatments aren’t meant to be alternatives to traditional weight loss methods, but they can help to fine-tune your healthy eating and exercise efforts.

BOTOX® Side Effects: What’s Normal and How to Reduce Them

Neurotoxin injections such as BOTOX®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® are some of the most popular anti-aging skin treatments among women and men alike. They can be used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead, between the brows, at the corners of the eyes, and in other areas. While BOTOX injections are a generally safe and minimally invasive procedure, they can come along with temporary side effects on your forehead and other areas where they are administered.

It is important to research potential BOTOX side effects prior to your appointment so that you know what to expect in the days following your treatment and can easily tell what’s normal and what might be considered a complication. Here, we take you through some of the most common side effects of BOTOX, as well as rarer complications, and provide tips on how to reduce BOTOX side effects to see results sooner.

Most Common BOTOX Side Effects

As with any injectable treatment, some mild side effects in the few days following your BOTOX, Dysport, or Xeomin appointment are to be expected. Some of the most common side effects of these anti-wrinkle injectable treatments include:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Tenderness of the injection site
  • Headaches

In some rare instances, more serious complications of BOTOX are possible. These can include shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, excessive muscle weakness, allergic reactions, nausea, and drooping eyelids. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your medical provider promptly.

How Long Do BOTOX Side Effects Last?

BOTOX side effects like bruising, swelling, and redness typically last for two to three days after your injections, though they can linger for up to two weeks. For this reason, we recommend that you come in for your BOTOX appointment at least two weeks before an important event such as a wedding, reunion, or vacation so that any bruising or swelling that occurs has plenty of time to diminish, revealing your final result in time for your event.

How to Reduce BOTOX Side Effects

First and foremost, you can significantly reduce the risks of BOTOX complications and side effects by choosing a qualified and highly experienced provider. The technique used to administer BOTOX can have a profound effect on the severity and longevity of resulting side effects after BOTOX, Dysport, or Xeomin. For example, drooping eyelids after forehead BOTOX injections often occur due to improper injection technique and placement, as well as using too much BOTOX in the wrong areas. This side effect of forehead BOTOX can be avoided by simply choosing a provider who has ample experience administering BOTOX in this area.

In addition to working with a reputable BOTOX provider, you can help to reduce mild BOTOX side effects such as bruising and swelling by following these tips:

    • Avoid vigorously rubbing or massaging the treated area for the first 1 to 2 days after getting BOTOX. This will prevent the product from spreading to other areas.
    • Gently apply a cold compress to the area to reduce swelling.
    • Avoid strenuous physical activity for the first 1 to 2 days after getting BOTOX to help reduce swelling and bruising.
    • Do not take blood-thinning medications or supplements for a few days before getting BOTOX, as these can make bruising worse.
    • Avoid alcohol for the first 24 hours after your BOTOX appointment to reduce bruising and swelling.
    • Keep your head elevated while sleeping or relaxing at home to keep blood from pooling in your face, helping to reduce bruising and swelling.
    • Talk to your provider about taking arnica tablets before and after BOTOX. Arnica montana is a common herbal supplement that may help to reduce bruising.

Are There Long-Term Side Effects of BOTOX?

No, there are no long-term side effects associated with BOTOX when administered properly. BOTOX works by temporarily relaxing the muscle contractions that cause lines and wrinkles to form on your skin. This effect gradually wears away over three to six months, as your body metabolizes the product. Thus, once the BOTOX is eliminated from your body, it has no lasting effects.

Again, it is important to note that you will see the best BOTOX results with the lowest risk of side effects or complications when you work with a properly trained and experienced provider. Doing the extra research upfront to find the best BOTOX provider near you will pay off in the long run with top-notch results and a minimal risk of side effects.

Can You Stop BOTOX Once You Start?

Yes — as mentioned above, the effects of BOTOX are only temporary, so your face will return to its natural appearance as soon as the product has fully worn away. The rate at which the body metabolizes the product will vary from person to person, though three to six months is the average longevity of BOTOX results.

The only cosmetic effect you should notice after stopping BOTOX is that lines and wrinkles will become noticeable again. However, there is evidence that getting regular BOTOX injections may help to slow the aging process and prevent new lines and wrinkles from forming in the future.

Bottom Line

Side effects like mild to moderate bruising, swelling, tenderness at the injection site are normal and to be expected in the days following your BOTOX appointment. However, if you notice anything out of the ordinary such as intense pain, bleeding, or eyelid drooping, contact your medical provider for advice on the next appropriate steps.

Your Ultimate Wedding Beauty Planning Guide: What and When to Start

It’s no secret that a lot goes into planning a wedding — from the venue, food, and music to bridesmaids’ dresses, groomsmen’s tuxes, and your wedding dress. While planning each of these items is, of course, important, don’t forget to carve out some space in your bustling pre-wedding schedule to focus on yourself and any beauty treatments you’d like to have before your big day.

By planning out your wedding beauty timeline as much ahead of time as you can, you can easily fit every treatment on your wishlist into the months before you say “I do.” Here, we break down how soon you need to start each beauty treatment in order to see your final stunning results in plenty of time to walk down the aisle.

Skin

Getting glowing, radiant skin for your wedding will take a bit of prep work, as new skincare products and treatments can take some time to work. But trust us, your results will be well worth it!

Customized Skincare Regimen

When to start: 1 year out

The best way to treat and prevent any number of skin conditions — from dryness and flaking to acne and wrinkles to dark spots and uneven skin tone — is to work with a dermatologist to create a customized skincare regimen. However, it can take several months for the results of a new skincare regimen to show up on your skin, even though it’s working hard behind the scenes. So it’s best to schedule a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist as early as a year before your wedding so you can begin using your new products well in advance.

Also note that some ingredients like retinol need to be gradually introduced to your skin to minimize side effects like redness, dryness, and flaking. So if you plan on adding retinol or other similar ingredients to your skincare routine, be sure to do so several months in advance. This will also help you to see the best results from these new products.

Laser Skin Treatments

When to start: 6 months out

Laser skin treatments can treat a range of common skin problems, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne and acne scars, redness and visible veins, dark spots, dull skin texture, and more. Depending on the type of laser you choose, after effects like peeling, flaking, and redness can be common, so you want to give your skin plenty of time to heal and rejuvenate after your last last treatment appointment.

Injectables

When to start: 6 months out

If you’ve never had injectable fillers or BOTOX®/Dysport® before, start at least six months before your wedding to make sure you love your results. You can get a final treatment if needed at least two weeks before your wedding day, but it’s best to err on the sooner side to ensure that all bruising and swelling has completely diminished and your final results have developed.

Facials

When to start: 3 to 6 months out

Don’t start working with a brand-new aesthetician right before your wedding. Get your first facial with someone new a few months beforehand so you know how your skin will react. Once you know your skin tolerates this specific facial well, you can get regular facials throughout your wedding planning phase, getting your last one no sooner than one week before your big day.

Body

Body-smoothing treatments are popular picks before weddings, but it’s important to get the timing right so you can enjoy your full results in time for your wedding and honeymoon.

Laser Hair Removal

When to start: 1 year out

Have a beach wedding or a romantic honeymoon planned somewhere tropical? Starting laser hair removal a year in advance will give you plenty of time to complete a full round of treatments so you can relax on the beach with smooth, effortless skin.

Most people need 6 to 8 laser hair removal treatments to see optimal results. Since each treatment is typically spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, start as soon as you can so you can fit your full treatment in before your wedding day.

Body Contouring

When to start: 6 months out

Body contouring treatments like EMSCULPT® Neo and CoolSculpting® Elite can help you get the slim, toned-looking physique you want for your wedding day. Plan on starting these treatments around six months in advance to give your results plenty of time to fully develop. Some people see the best results after a series of body contouring treatments, so starting earlier will also give you time to fit more than one appointment in before the big day.

Cellulite Reduction

When to start: 3 to 4 months out

Don’t let pesky cellulite keep you from loving the way you look and feel in your wedding dress and bikini on your honeymoon! Cellulite treatment options like VelaShape® can smooth away cellulite lumps and bumps without surgery.

Most people see the best results after six VelaShape treatment sessions, each spaced around two weeks apart.

Hair & Brows

Give your hair and brows a glow-up before your wedding with these quick and easy treatments.

Scalp Treatments

When to start: 3 months out

Getting healthier, fuller-looking hair starts with your scalp, and what better way to pamper yourself before your wedding than with a quick and easy scalp treatment? In a 30-minute appointment, the HydraFacial® Keravive scalp treatment removes dirt, oil, and other impurities from your hair follicles while simultaneously hydrating and nourishing your scalp for smooth, radiant hair.

To see the best results, skincare professionals recommend a series of three Keravive treatments over the course of three months.

Microblading

When to start: 3 months out

Microblading is a type of semi-permanent makeup used to fill in or reshape your brows, giving you an elegant look without plucking or waxing. Because it can take some time for your skin to heal after microblading, it’s recommended that you schedule your appointment for at least three months before getting married.

Microblading can last 18 to 30 months before gradually fading away, so you should be able to continue enjoying your results well after your wedding day and honeymoon.

What’s the Best Laser Treatment for Darker Skin Tones?

Laser and light treatments are some of the most common cosmetic procedures, with over four million of these treatments performed in the US each year. However, not all laser treatments are created equal. In fact, getting the wrong type of laser treatment for your skin type, tone, and needs can cause unwanted effects such as hyperpigmentation, a condition characterized by uneven dark patches or spots of skin.

Fortunately, laser technology has come a long way and there are now safe, effective options available for people of all skin types and tones. The key is to choose the right type of laser for your skin — or, of course, work with a reputable laser provider who understands the qualities that make the best laser treatments for darker skin tones.

One such laser that is known for its ability to treat any skin tone is the MOXI® laser by Sciton. See how MOXI uses cutting-edge technology to offer safe, gentle, and effective treatments for all skin tones and types, plus make note of what types of lasers to avoid if you have darker skin or a tan.

What Makes MOXI Different?

Lasers must target water, blood vessels, or melanin (the pigment in your skin and hair) in order to work. Lasers that target melanin can be particularly problematic when used on darker skin tones or tanned skin, because the laser is unable to distinguish between the treatment areas and the surrounding skin. This can lead to hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, scarring, and other unwanted side effects.

MOXI, on the other hand, targets water, so it can be used on any skin tone and during any time of the year. Lasers like MOXI that target water work by generating heat in the underlying dermis layer of your skin without affecting the skin’s surface. This heat then stimulates your skin’s natural collagen production, providing a rejuvenating and restorative effect.

What Does MOXI Treat?

MOXI is best known for its use as an excellent prejuvenation treatment that can help to prevent common skin problems from occurring in the future, as well as helping you to maintain a bright, radiant complexion. However, MOXI can also be used to treat a number of specific skin concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, rough skin texture, a dull, lackluster complexion, and even melasma.

Because MOXI does not directly target melanin nor damage the skin’s surface, this laser treatment can safely and effectively treat skin dyspigmentation conditions such as melasma, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. Other types of lasers that work by creating micro-injuries in the skin’s surface should not be used to treat melasma, as this can lead to complications such as hyperpigmentation and scarring, as well as cause melasma to worsen.

What Can I Expect During My MOXI Treatment?

Before your MOXI treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to your face. Then, your provider will adjust the MOXI settings according to your skin’s specific needs and will begin gliding the small, handheld device over your skin. Most people describe feeling a slight warming sensation during this process. Your entire MOXI treatment can take anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes, depending on your unique needs.

For the first several hours after your MOXI treatment, you’ll be asked to avoid the sun and wear a moisturizing sunscreen to protect your skin. You can resume wearing makeup 24 hours after your MOXI treatment. Otherwise, MOXI does not require downtime, so you can resume your normal daily activities right after your appointment.

Most people see the best results after a series of 3 to 4 MOXI laser treatment sessions, with noticeable results becoming visible in just a few days.

MOXI can also be combined with other treatments such as broadband light (BBL) therapy for even more comprehensive results.

What Types of Lasers Are Not Suitable for Darker Skin?

Those with darker skin tones or tanned skin should avoid ablative lasers and those that directly target melanin in the skin or hair. If you are unsure if a particular laser treatment is suitable for your skin tone, schedule a consultation with a trained and experienced laser provider or board-certified dermatologist to discuss your specific needs and create a personalized laser treatment plan that safely meets those needs.

How to Determine Skin Tone

So what does “darker skin tone” mean, exactly? Dermatologists use the Fitzpatrick Scale to determine skin tone and make relevant skin treatment recommendations. In general, skin tones of IV, V, or VI on the Fitzpatrick scale may not be candidates for ablative lasers, as these skin types naturally produce more melanin than Fitzpatrick types I, II, and III. However, even those with fairer skin should avoid tanning prior to getting ablative laser treatments.

If you are not sure where you fall on the Fitzpatrick scale, your dermatologist should be able to assess your skin and determine your type for you.

How to Prevent Hyperpigmentation

In addition to choosing the right type of laser for your skin tone, you can help to prevent hyperpigmentation and other common skin concerns by following these tips:

  • Use SPF daily to protect against sun damage.
  • Wear sun-protective clothing like wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking shirts.
  • Add antioxidants to your skincare routine and diet for added free radical protection.
  • Don’t mix citrus fruits and the sun. Some citrus fruits like limes contain compounds that can cause blistering and dark patches of skin when exposed to the sun. Use caution when drinking margaritas or other cocktails that may come with a lime in the sun.
  • Avoid popping pimples or picking at acne scars. This can cause a type of hyperpigmentation called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which leaves dark spots behind on the skin following an injury such as an acne lesion.

If you’re still not sure what type of laser is best for your skin tone and specific needs, give our Boca Raton & Fort Lauderdale office a call at 561-247-2958 or contact us online to schedule a time to speak with one of our knowledgeable skincare professionals.

10 Tips for Choosing the Best BOTOX® Provider Near You

Are you considering getting BOTOX® injections to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles? Finding the right provider is crucial to achieving the best results. But with so many options out there, how do you choose the right one?

BOTOX® has become increasingly popular as a non-invasive cosmetic treatment to improve the look of aging skin. However, not all providers are created equal, and choosing the wrong one could lead to unsatisfactory results or even potential health risks.

When choosing the best BOTOX® provider near you, it’s essential to do your research and consider various factors. From experience and qualifications to safety protocols and patient satisfaction, there are many things to consider. Here are ten tips to help you make an informed decision and find the best provider for your BOTOX® treatment.

1. Ask Around & Create an Initial List

When looking for a BOTOX® provider, it’s always a good idea to start by asking your friends and family for recommendations. If they have had the treatment done themselves, they can provide invaluable information about the quality of their experience with various providers. This is one of the easiest ways to narrow down your choices and create an initial list of potential candidates.

2. Medical Credentials

The first step in your search for the right BOTOX practice is to verify the medical credentials of the individual who will be administering your BOTOX. This person must be properly trained and certified and, if not a physician themselves, should be working under a supervising board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

While it is common for physician assistants and other medical professionals to administer BOTOX, the supervising physician should also be available for direct consultation in case special concerns or questions come up during your appointment and their expertise is needed.

You should be able to easily find the medical credentials of doctors and staff on a practice’s website. If this information is hidden or nowhere to be found, consider it a red flag.

3. Experience

When choosing a BOTOX provider near you, you want to look for someone who has ample experience performing these injections. Because of the intricate anatomy of the face, BOTOX is as much of an art as it is a science. An excellent BOTOX provider should have extensive anatomical knowledge and an eye for aesthetics and balance, as well as the technical skill and knowledge needed to perform BOTOX injections properly.

To determine the experience level of a particular provider, take a look at before and after BOTOX photos on the practice’s website. Look for qualities such as symmetry, balance, and proportions when assessing these photos. You should also feel free to ask about a provider’s specific experience, training, and qualifications during your consultation.

4. Local Referrals and Positive Reviews

Getting a word-of-mouth referral is a great way to narrow your search for the best local BOTOX provider. If you are specifically looking for BOTOX in Boca Raton & Fort Lauderdale, for example, ask your South Florida friends and family for recommendations, then continue your research using that shortlist.

If you don’t know anyone locally who can provide recommendations, take a look at online reviews for the practices with which you’re considering working. Mostly positive, glowing reviews are always a good sign, but also make note of how (if at all) the practice responds to any negative comments that might come through.

5. Interview The Provider

Once you’ve narrowed down your list of potential providers, it’s a good idea to take the time to interview them in person. This will help you get a better understanding of their experience and qualifications, as well as get an insight into their approach and bedside manner. During the interview, ask questions about the expected results, potential side effects, recovery time, and any other queries you may have.

6. Make Sure You’re Covered

Before committing to a BOTOX® provider, ensure that the healthcare plan you have covered the treatment. Contact your insurance company and ask them about their policy regarding cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX® injections. If you don’t have health insurance or if it doesn’t cover the cost of your treatment, find out what type of payment plans the provider offers.

7. A Clean, Friendly Environment

Once you’ve narrowed your search to your top one or two picks, schedule a consultation with the BOTOX provider. When you arrive for your appointment, make note of the overall atmosphere. The practice should be clean and organized, and the doctors and staff should be friendly, welcoming, and willing to answer your questions.

When you meet with the person who will be administering your BOTOX, make sure you feel comfortable talking with him or her and confident in his or her expertise and ability to listen to your goals and create a customized injectable plan for you.

You should never feel as though you are being “upsold” anything or pressured into booking a BOTOX appointment. At the end of the day, your provider should have your best interests in mind, regardless of their bottom line.

8. A Realistic Price

There’s nothing wrong with taking advantage of a deal or discount on BOTOX or other injectables or cosmetic treatments. But don’t specifically choose a practice based purely on the price tag. As with most things, you get what you pay for when it comes to deeply discounted cosmetic treatments. If the advertised price is completely out of the ballpark of other providers, this is a red flag that something is not quite right.

Along these lines, avoid going to beauty salons, at-home “BOTOX parties,” or other non-medical clinics for injectables. While these places might offer a lower price, it could cost you in the long run in the form of serious complications or poor-quality results. Always seek a qualified medical professional for BOTOX and other in-office cosmetic treatments.

9. Multiple Treatment Options

Maybe BOTOX isn’t quite the right treatment for your cosmetic goals, but dermal fillers or a combination of both fillers and BOTOX could be a great fit. Choose a practice that offers multiple cosmetic treatment options to ensure you are able to get exactly what you need to get the results you’re looking for.

A provider that only offers BOTOX will not necessarily be the best fit for everyone, and you don’t want to waste time and money finding that out the hard way. A practice with providers experienced in many different treatment options will offer much more flexibility and a range of options to offer if BOTOX alone won’t meet your needs and goals.

10. Follow-Up Services

Finally, make sure your BOTOX provider offers follow-up services after your initial appointment. Follow-up appointments are important for several reasons: 1) to make sure you are happy with your results and 2) to ensure there are no complications in the healing process. Your provider should also be willing and available to field any phone calls or questions you might have that come up after your initial appointment.

You can ask about a practice’s typical follow-up process at your consultation. If you get the impression that you’ll be sent on your way without follow-up, consider looking elsewhere.

How to Prepare for Your BOTOX® Appointment?

Once you have found the best BOTOX® provider near you and scheduled an appointment, taking the necessary steps to prepare for your treatment is important. Here are some tips on how to get ready for your BOTOX® appointment:

  • Avoid alcoholic beverages 24 hours before and after the procedure
  • Refrain from taking any medication or supplements that may thin your blood
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to help you relax during the treatment
  • Bring a list of questions that you may have for your provider
  • Plan for someone to drive you home after the procedure

Choosing the right BOTOX® provider is essential for achieving optimal results and avoiding potential health risks.

What to Expect from a BOTOX® Appointment?

When you visit your chosen BOTOX® provider for your appointment, it’s important to have realistic expectations. The procedure is quick and relatively painless, but the results can take up to two weeks to appear. Your provider will assess your face and determine the areas that need treatment to achieve the desired results. They will then inject small amounts of BOTOX® into the targeted areas using a very thin needle. The entire procedure usually takes around 15 minutes, and you can return to your normal activities immediately afterward.

Bottom Line

The process of finding a qualified BOTOX provider in your area might seem daunting at first, but using this checklist should help you narrow down your search fairly quickly.

3 Ways to Reduce Your Risk of Skin Cancer

Although the most common form of cancer in the country — with 5 million cases diagnosed in the US each year — skin cancer is also one of the most preventable. As we head into warmer, sunnier weather once again, keep these three key skin cancer prevention strategies in mind.

1. Protect Your Skin from UV Light

One of the most effective and easiest ways to minimize your risk of skin cancer is to keep your skin protected from UV light, including indoor tanning beds and the sun. Wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15 daily, and higher SPFs when planning to be outdoors for more than an hour. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, and try to seek shade during the peak sun hours of 10am and 4pm whenever possible.

Sun-protective clothing such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts made for warm weather are also beneficial when outdoors for long periods of time.

2. Perform Regular Skin Exams

Get in the habit of performing regular self-exams on your skin, looking for any moles or marks that show signs of melanoma. It can also be helpful to create a mole map for yourself, indicating on a piece of paper where on your body any moles are. That way, you can reference your mole map the next time you perform a self-exam and note any changes in the appearance of existing moles, as well as the location of new moles.

Follow up with your dermatologist if you find any suspicious-looking moles. Otherwise, make a yearly appointment for a skin health checkup with your dermatologist. If you don’t already see a skincare professional, give our Boca Raton & Fort Lauderdale office a call at 561-462-0489 to schedule an appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists.

3. Eat an Antioxidant-Rich Diet

Cellular damage that can lead to skin cancer happens when too many harmful free radicals are created than your body can neutralize with its supply of antioxidants. Adding more antioxidants to your diet can help to boost your body’s natural antioxidant supply and its ability to neutralize free radicals and prevent oxidative stress and cellular damage.

Just some examples of foods that are high in natural antioxidants include:

  • Bell peppers
  • Citrus fruits
  • Berries
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Spinach

Skincare Hacks to Treat and Prevent Stressed Skin

Does your skin suddenly feel dry and rough? Is it breaking out more than usual or getting red and itchy? These could be signs of stress that are showing up on your skin.

See our favorite skincare hacks to reverse these signs of stressed-out skin, plus get some tips on how to better manage stress to prevent its negative effects on your skin and entire body.

How Are Stress and Skin Related?

When we are stressed — whether acutely, like right before a job interview, or over long periods of time — our bodies respond by releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline into our bloodstreams. While helpful when we are in real danger and need to rely on natural “flight or fight” instincts, these hormones can cause a cascade of negative effects on our bodies and skin.

Cortisol, for instance, leads to an increase in sebum (oil) production in the skin, which can clog pores and cause acne. When elevated for a long period of time, cortisol can also lead to premature skin aging.

Additionally, chronic stress induces an inflammatory response, which can cause flare-ups of inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and rosacea, as well as lead to skin dryness, redness, and sensitivities.

How to Treat Stressed-Out Skin

If signs of stress are showing up on your skin, try implementing these skincare tips into your routine:

    • Use gentle, anti-inflammatory ingredients. Now is not the time to use harsh or aggressive skincare products or treatments, since your skin is already responding to inflammation. Instead, use calming cleansers and moisturizers that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients like chamomile, feverfew, and aloe to help soothe and rebalance your skin.
    • Use a barrier repair moisturizer to keep irritants out. Barrier repair moisturizers not only hydrate dry, dull skin, but they also create a physical barrier between your skin and the outside environment to keep irritants and allergens out.
    • Try a relaxing in-office facial. Choose a gentle facial treatment like HydraFacial™ to help revive dull, stressed skin. We love HydraFacial for stressed-out skin because this three-step treatment gently cleanses, hydrates, and protects your skin without any harsh treatments or products.
    • Practice healthy lifestyle habits. Getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and eating a healthy diet can go a long way when it comes to getting and maintaining soft, healthy skin. These habits can also do wonders for managing stress, offering preventative benefits, too!

How to Prevent Stressed Skin

The number-one way to prevent stressed skin is to take steps to better manage your response to stress. While it is impossible to avoid stress altogether, there are many ways to help your mind and body cope with life’s stressors when they inevitably come up.

  • Download a stress-relief app. There are many free and paid apps for stress-relief that you can download on your phone and tap into when you need a break or feel overwhelmed. Some of the best-rated mental health apps include Calm, Headspace, Happify, and Wysa.
  • Go outside. Numerous studies have demonstrated the mental and physical benefits of being outside in nature. Make time in your schedule to get outside daily to help lower stress and boost your mood.
  • Stay active. Studies also show that physical activity profoundly reduces stress and its unwanted effects by releasing feel-good endorphins and balancing stress hormones. Pick any type of exercise that you enjoy doing, such as walking outside, doing yoga, or weight lifting, to reap the mental and physical benefits.

4 Facts about MOXI Laser Treatments You Probably Didn’t Know

Looking for a laser treatment that has it all — effective, yet gentle treatments that are suitable for any skin type? Look no further than MOXI, a popular laser skin treatment that can treat and prevent a range of common skin concerns, from sun damage and dark spots to wrinkles and uneven skin tone.

If you’ve never heard of MOXI or are wondering if it could be right for you, take a look at these must-know facts about this popular laser treatment.

1. MOXI Is Safe for All Skin Tones

Some lasers are known to be best for lighter skin tones because they can sometimes cause hyperpigmentation in those with dark skin. Additionally, some types of lasers are not suitable for treating melasma, as they can make this condition worse.

MOXI, on the other hand, is safe and effective for all skin tones and types. It can also be an effective treatment option for melasma and other existing pigmentation problems, since it does not produce the high levels of heat that can trigger hyperpigmentation issues like some other types of lasers.

2. MOXI Has “Prejuvenation” Benefits

While it can be used to treat a variety of existing skin conditions such as melasma, sun damage, and wrinkles, the MOXI laser is perhaps best known as a prejuvenation tool to prevent skin problems from popping up in the future. Because MOXI is so gentle on the skin, it can be used even before lines and wrinkles show up to help keep collagen strong.

3. MOXI Doesn’t Require Extensive Recovery

This fractionated, non-ablative laser is gentle on the skin and doesn’t require downtime or extensive healing afterwards, like with ablative lasers. With MOXI, you can expect to get back to your regular routine directly after your appointment, making it easy to squeeze your laser treatment into a busy schedule.

That said, swelling and redness are common side effects with any laser treatment, so it’s best not to plan your treatment the day of an important event.

4. MOXI Plays Well With Other Treatments

MOXI results can be very nicely complemented by other skin treatments such as BBL photofacials. During your consultation, your skincare provider will discuss your unique needs and goals with you to determine if you might see the best and fastest results by pairing MOXI with other cosmetic treatments.

If you would like to learn more about how MOXI works or to schedule a consultation to see if it could be right for you, call our Boca Raton office at 561-247-2958 or book your consultation online today!

3 Reasons Why Spring Is the Perfect Time for Laser Hair Removal

If the fresh spring air and warmer, longer days have you in the mood for a spring refresh, you might want to think about adding a few skin treatments to your to-do this season. In fact, spring is one of the best times of year to get laser hair removal before the summer sunshine arrives. Here’s why.

1. You’ll See the Best Results before a Summer Tan

Laser hair removal works by targeting and disabling hair follicles in their growth phase. Because it is actually the pigment in the hair follicle that the laser targets, you will see the best results when you have the greatest contrast between your skin tone and the color of your hair.

As we are coming out of winter and into early spring, our skin is typically at its lightest shade, which will help the laser energy target the contrasting hair follicles. On the other hand, if you wait until you have a summer tan, the laser energy will have a more difficult time distinguishing between the pigment in your skin and hair.

Note that advanced laser technology has made it possible for people with dark skin and dark hair and light skin and light hair combinations to have successful laser hair removal treatments. Just be sure to choose a reputable provider with access to the latest laser technology.

2. Laser Hair Removal Prep Is Easier in the Spring

In preparation for laser hair removal treatments, you’ll need to stop waxing or plucking your hair several weeks before your appointment. These types of traditional hair removal leave nothing behind for the laser energy to target, which would render your treatment ineffective.

Most people find that it’s easier to forgo waxing and plucking in the springtime, when they can cover up in leggings and a hoodie anyway. If you wait until bikini season is in full swing to start LHR treatments, on the other hand, it might be more of a challenge to put a pause on waxing and plucking.

3. Caring for Your Skin after LHR Is Simpler in Spring

Finally, you’ll need to stay out of the sun in between your laser hair removal sessions to get the best results and minimize the risk of complications like hyperpigmentation. This is usually much easier to do in the cooler spring months before the summer sunshine starts calling your name.

Because LHR works by targeting hair follicles that are in the growth phase at any given moment, you will need to schedule several sessions, each spaced a few weeks apart, in order to treat all of the hair in the area. So starting your first laser hair removal treatment now will help you be well on your way to getting smooth, carefree skin for the summer.
