There is no known cause for lichen planus; however, it has been suggested that certain medical conditions, environmental contaminants, and even certain medications are connected to cases of lichen planus.
What does lichen planus look like?
Lichen planus typically appears as a small, flat-topped, multi-sided rash of purplish bumps that often grow together to form scaly places on the skin. When occurring on the insides of cheeks and other membranes, the rash is white or may appear as ulcers.
