WHAT IS VITILIGO?
Vitiligo is a skin condition where the body inhibits the pigment producing process to form white patches on the skin on any part of the body. In addition, for some patients with vitiligo, the inside of the mouth and nose as well as the inner layer of the eyeball and hair can turn white.
WHAT CAUSES VITILIGO?
There is no known cause of vitiligo; however, research shows it may be associated with autoimmune disorders including hypothyroidism, Addison’s Disease, and pernicious anemia although the association is not clear. In addition, other issues such as trauma and severe emotional distress may also trigger vitiligo.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF VITILIGO?
The symptoms of vitiligo typically show up on body areas most exposed to the sun, such as the face and lips, arms, hands and feet. For the areas affected by vitiligo, the most noticeable symptom is the lightening of patches of skin where the pigment decreases.
HOW CAN MY VITILIGO BE TREATED?
Using the Ra Medical Systems Pharos Excimer Laser, we perform a series of laser treatments that are designed to dramatically reduce the re-pigmentation of the skin. The laser emits a narrow band of UVB light that has been shown to promote re-pigmentation. On top of treating vitiligo, this laser has also been shown to promote the re-pigmentation of stretch marks.
