HydraFacial® vs. Microdermabrasion

Over time, the skin on our faces can become worn down with dirt, grime, dead skin cells, and other impurities that can leave our faces looking old and much less attractive. These issues with the skin can often leave men and women of all ages feelings self-conscious, embarrassed, and frustrated. While the saying goes, “Put your best face forward,” the reality is that it can seem nearly impossible to do that when you know that your face is not as smooth and youthful as you want it to be.

While these various facial skin blemishes can make you feel like you can’t enjoy yourself in public, the good news is that there are various cosmetic treatments available that can help correct some of these frustrations. However, the biggest question you need to ask yourself is not “Should I have a treatment done?” but rather, “Which treatment is right for me?” Two of the most common and trusted facial rejuvenating treatments are HydraFacial® and microdermabrasion. Many patients have a misconception that these two treatments are interchangeable when the reality is that they achieve different results for different issues. Here, you will find information about each of these treatments so that you can better decide how to revitalize your skin.

What Is a HydraFacial®?

With the revolutionary HydraFacial® treatment, your skincare expert will use a handheld device that creates a vortex motion to exfoliate your facial skin. This exfoliation includes removing dead skin and other debris from your skin to it smoother and softer than it has been in years.

A HydraFacial® treatment is comprised of four different facial treatments. The first of these treatments is the cleansing and exfoliation of your skin. The second portion of a HydraFacial® is a chemical peel, where the handheld device (or wand) provides a chemical solution made up of salicylic and glycolic acids to clean dirt that is lodged deep within your pores. The third step is the extraction phase, where the wand essentially vacuums up remaining impurities from your skin and pores. Finally, a hydrating serum is applied to your skin. This hydrating serum also includes peptides, antioxidants, and other helpful nutrients. Once all of these steps are complete, you can look forward to achieving facial skin that is more hydrated, cleansed, and youthful, which can allow you to feel more comfortable and confident with your appearance.

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Chances are that you have heard of microdermabrasion; however, many people do not fully understand what this treatment consists of. Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure in which the top layers of skin are removed to allow for new and healthy skin to be revealed. At Sanctuary Medical Aesthetic Center, we are proud to offer two variations of this treatment: a crystal-emitting spray or a diamond-tip handpiece. With the crystal spray, extremely fine crystals are directed to the treatment area at a high speed. These crystals are then vacuumed up immediately, along with the upper layer of skin and any dirt and grime on the surface. For the diamond-tip microdermabrasion, a handheld device called a wand is drawn across the treatment area to exfoliate the skin.

Am I a Candidate?

While both of these treatments can offer stunning results to your facial skin, it is important to realize that some impurities and blemishes are better treated with either HydraFacial® or microdermabrasion. If you are interested in rejuvenating your tired and dull complexion, then make sure to schedule a consultation with one of our trained and knowledgeable skincare professionals. During your consultation, you will be able to discuss your concerns and cosmetic goals, which can help your skin service provider determine which treatment can best help you achieve the goals you desire.

Ideal candidates should be non-smoking men and women in good general health who have realistic expectations of their goals.

What is Better Microdermabrasion or HydraFacial®?

The reality is that neither of these procedures is necessarily better than the other, though each procedure can better address certain skin conditions. Some of the perks and benefits of each include:

HydraFacial® Microdermabrasion
  • Allows for customization
  • Penetrates more deeply
  • Can treat acne
  • Quicker
  • Gentler
  • Lessens wrinkles
  • Addresses hyperpigmentation
  • Treats acne scars
  • Reduces sun-damaged skin
  • Higher chance of red skin, slight bruising, and skin dryness

Both HydraFacial® and microdermabrasion can brighten a dull complexion and uneven skin texture. Determining which is better for your skin and your needs is something that you and our skin care experts can do together.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

These treatments vary in necessity depending on your skin’s needs. One thing to keep in mind is that your skin works on a cyclical basis, which means that new skin begins to lose its luster and health (becoming old and dried out) after about one month. This is why it is a smart idea to undergo multiple HydraFacial® or microdermabrasion sessions so that you can continue increasing your collagen and elastin production, which results in soft, supple skin.
