Below you will find information about laser hair removal, including what it is, how it’s done, and how long you can expect to enjoy your results.
What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses light energy to remove unwanted hair. Essentially, the laser energy heats the skin to damage (and kill) the hair follicle, which keeps hair from growing back. This treatment is consistency based, so it is important that in order to see an improvement, weakening the hair follicle consistently over time will improve the results. Most laser hair removal devices are FDA approved to be a semi-permanent reduction, not a permanent removal. Laser hair removal will permanently reduce the number of hairs in the treated area, but it will not necessarily remove every single hair in the area. Along with giving you dynamic results, one of the benefits of laser hair removal is that it can be used successfully on different skin types.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
At Sanctuary Medical Aesthetic Center, we are proud to use the GentleMax Pro® laser and Sciton® Bare for our laser hair removal treatments. Whether you have small patches of unwanted hair or large areas of hair that you want removed, you can trust the GentleMax Pro® laser to give you the smooth and hairless skin you’ve always desired.
The GentleMax Pro® laser can be used to effectively remove hair from different areas of your face and body. Some of the most common treatment areas include the upper lip, sideburns, arms, armpits, and bikini. Your specific treatment time varies with the treatment location(s); however, most sessions take anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour to complete.
For this non-invasive procedure, your laser skin specialist will direct the laser light energy at the targeted treatment areas on your body. The laser energy will penetrate the skin to reach the shaft of unwanted hair. A benefit of this treatment is that only your hair follicle will be destroyed while the surrounding skin will not be negatively affected. After your treatment, you may experience some redness, bumps, and soreness in the areas that were treated by the laser hair removal device; however, these side effects will dissipate in the next few hours. Over the following two weeks, the treated hair will fall out, giving you the smooth and hairless skin you desire. While you will see significant improvements after your first treatment, many patients require up to six sessions to reach their optimal hair-free goals.
How To Prepare for Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment?
As with any cosmetic surgery or treatment, one of the most important aspects of your laser hair removal is your consultation. At your consultation, you will be able to discuss your frustrations and goals with your specialist. Additionally, your hair removal specialist will be able to evaluate your condition to create a treatment plan just for you. Also, you will be given all pre- and post-treatment instructions during your consultation.
It is important that you prepare your skin for your treatment. This includes staying out of direct sunlight and wearing sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher for the weeks leading up to your treatment session. In the days before your treatment, you should refrain from using any topical prescription products, including creams and lotions.
What Should I Expect With Laser Hair Removal Recovery?
Besides giving you smooth and hairless skin, laser hair removal does not require any intense downtime. It is recommended that you stay out of the sun for a minimum of two weeks before and after your laser treatment to ensure that you do not suffer from any adverse reactions. After your laser hair removal treatment, you can get back to your normal daily activities; however, it is important that you do not wear any makeup or use any topical products (creams, lotions, deodorant, or perfume) for the first 24 hours after your laser hair removal treatment. It is also important that you keep the area as clean and dry as possible. If you experience any discomfort, you can apply a wet washcloth or ice to the treated area. Using SPF 30 sunscreen daily, hydrating, and following a proper skin care routine can help not only prolong your results but give you the skin aesthetic you’ve always wanted.
Why Is Laser Hair Removal Better Than Alternatives?
Just think about it, who wants to spend hours of their life tweezing, shaving, and waxing unwanted hair? Not only are these methods time consuming, but they can also be painful and costly. And what’s worse is that the hair will only grow back, forcing you to continue tweezing, shaving, and waxing til the end of time. However, with laser hair removal, you don’t have to worry about those time-consuming methods when you’re already in a rush to get out of the house. Instead, you will be able to use that extra time for the things you enjoy, like going and getting that cup of coffee in the morning, or watching the sunrise, or just sleeping in.
How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?
Generally, laser hair removal lasts for a long period of time. At Sanctuary Medical Aesthetic Center, our laser hair removal package includes six sessions performed every four to six weeks. Each patient is different, and this treatment is case-by-case. Patients can be happy with their results and stick to maintenance treatment sessions, which are typically every two to three months, or one to two times a year, depending on their individual needs. If by the end of the sixth session patients need more treatment, then a second package may be offered. However, from experience, one six-session package is usually all that is required.
The reality is that everyone will respond differently to laser hair removal treatments. Some patients may see long-lasting results, with the hair being removed permanently, while other men and women may see some hair regrowth over the next few months or years. That being said, it has been shown that 80 percent of the hair treated by laser energy is permanently removed. So, while you may need to have maintenance treatments every few months, the amount of hair treated will be significantly less than you had at the beginning of your laser hair removal journey.
