What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious skin condition that produces a build-up of thickened and flaking skin. While some cases are very mild and result in small unnoticeable patches of dry skin, others are much more severe where large areas of the body may be covered in thick, red, scaly skin. Many more degrees of severity fall between these two ranges.

What causes psoriasis?

The cause of psoriasis is unknown although it is thought to have something to do with the immune system as well as genetic and environmental factors in those who are predisposed to it. Psoriasis tends to run in families although it can lie dormant for years in some who carry it.

What does psoriasis look like?

The most common forms of psoriasis are red or pink areas of thickened, raised, and scaling skin usually on the knees, elbows and scalp. It can resemble rough, hard, dry elbows but only worse. It classically affects areas over the elbows, knees, and scalp and is sometimes more common in areas where trauma, scratching and abrasions have occurred.

How is psoriasis treated?

First and foremost, it is important to make a proper diagnosis to ensure it is, in fact, psoriasis. From there, treatment consists of several therapies depending on the severity. With psoriasis, there is no cure, so the goal is to interrupt the progression of overactive skin cells and improve the look and feel of the skin as well as reduce the discomfort. Mild to moderate psoriasis responds to topical treatments while more severe cases require additional therapies including oral and injectable medicines, as well as light therapy. We will evaluate your condition in order to recommend the most effect treatment.

How can I avoid psoriasis flare-ups?

The best course of action to avoid psoriasis flare-ups is to maintain proper hygiene, allow natural sun exposure (though very carefully) and reduce stress. During your initial consultation, we will discuss this with you.
