What is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is a skin condition that affects the bottoms (soles) of the feet. It is a red, scaly rash that is very itchy and causes a lot of discomfort. Although it is called athlete’s foot, it can affect anyone. It most often occurs on the bottoms of feet and between the toes but can also grow on the heels of your feet as well as the palms of your hands and between your fingers.

What causes Athlete’s Foot?

For the most part, athlete’s foot is caused by a specific fungus that is found in warm, moist environments, such as gym floors (especially locker rooms), showers, and pool surfaces.

Who gets Athlete’s Foot?

Anyone can get athlete’s foot, but those who frequent locker rooms at health clubs and gyms, as well as enclosed pools at fitness facilities, are more likely to come in contact with it – hence the name “athlete’s foot.”

How do I know if I have Athlete’s Foot?

Simply, you know when you do. But, if your feet are red and become scaly and very itchy on the bottoms and between your toes, most likely you have it. In rare cases, if the fungal infection reaches the toenails, they can become infected as well. In that case, they may crumble or thicken and even come off.

What do I do if I think I have Athlete’s Foot?

The best thing to do is to make an appointment to confirm the diagnosis of athlete’s foot. You will receive a prescription for a topical antifungal cream that clears it up rather quickly. If it is a condition that has not cleared up or keeps coming back, we may take a skin sample to see if there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

How do I prevent Athlete’s Foot?

There are steps to take to prevent athlete’s foot, including keeping your feet and toes dry and clean. When you participate in physical activities, be sure to wear cotton socks with your tennis shoes. And, when you are in a sports locker room, do not go barefooted as that is a breeding ground for the fungus that causes athlete’s foot. If you shower there, be sure to wear flip flops or other waterproof shoe like Crocs.
