Microdermabrasion

What is microdermabrasion and how does it work?

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive treatment procedure that gently exfoliates the skin, removing the top layer of dead or “impure” skin cells, which allows a fresh layer of skin to surface. The microdermabrasion procedure can be done utilizing a crystal-emitting spray or with a handheld medical device called a diamond-tip wand. Both methods help improve skin tone, promote collagen growth, and smooth the skin. Microdermabrasion procedures are safe, effective, and cause little to no pain. Unlike a dermabrasion, which is mainly recommended for fair skin only, a microdermabrasion procedure can be safely performed on all skin types without causing scarring or changes in skin tone.

Why you may consider microdermabrasion

If you are looking to achieve clearer, healthier skin, a microdermabrasion can effectively remove “imperfect” skin cells, resulting in a new brighter and softer layer of skin. Microdermabrasion is typically performed on the facial area, but can it also be used on the neck, hands, chest, and back. A microdermabrasion is a safe and gentler treatment alternative to a dermabrasion, which causes patients with darker skin tones to sometimes experience scarring or discoloration. Microdermabrasion can be safely used across all skin types to help correct and treat various cosmetic skin conditions, including:

  • Certain types of acne, including back acne
  • Certain types of acne scars and other scars
  • Sun damage and sun spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Brown spots
  • Age spots
  • Dull skin

What does a microdermabrasion procedure involve?

A microdermabrasion is about a quick, virtually pain-free procedure that takes place in the comfort of your doctor’s office. Although usually not required, your doctor may also administer certain medications to help relax you, as well as numb the treatment area. Once you are relaxed, your doctor will cleanse and prep your skin. Next, depending on the procedure method, your doctor will either use a crystal-emitting spray or a diamond-tip handpiece to gently exfoliate and remove the top layer of dead skin cells. Once the procedure is complete, your doctor will apply sunscreen and moisturizer to safeguard the new layer of skin.

What is microdermabrasion recovery like?

After a microdermabrasion, your skin may appear pink and feel dry or tight. However, full recovery is expected within 24 hours after the procedure. Other side effects may include eye irritation and hyperpigmentation. For the best possible post-procedure results, your doctor may recommend that you continue to moisturize and use sunscreen to provide the skin with continued protection. Your doctor may also recommend that you avoid intense sun exposure and certain types of makeup for the first few days after the procedure.

What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?

By removing the layer of dead or imperfect skin cells, a microdermabrasion can help rejuvenate and freshen the skin on your face or other areas of your body. Benefits and advantages of a microdermabrasion include:

  • Healthier, clearer skin
  • Improved circulation of the skin
  • Safe and effective across all skin types and various skin conditions
  • Enhanced absorption of other skin care products
  • Cleaner pores and reduced pore size
