3 Steps to Protect Your Skin from Halloween Makeup Frights

Whether you want to go out looking positively ghoulish or oh-so-sexy, the right Halloween makeup can make any costume come to life. But if you’d rather not wake up the next day looking spookier than your zombie costume, follow these three must-know steps for applying and removing Halloween makeup the right way.

1. Ingredient Check

Costume makeup is formulated differently from regular everyday makeup, since it is meant to offer heavy coverage and stay put even in extreme conditions. But the tradeoff of a smashing-good pumpkin or witch look is that some costume makeup ingredients can clog your pores, irritate your skin, or even cause a rash in sensitive skin types.

Certain cosmetic dyes, particularly red dyes, are known to cause allergic reactions in some people. Do a spot test of new makeup before your spooky night out to avoid any adverse reactions.

Not sure which costume makeups are the best? When in doubt, go for a well-known, professional brand like Ben Nye, Make Up For Ever, or MAC rather than reaching for cheap makeup palettes from your local Halloween popup store.

2. Proper Prep

Before applying any makeup or other products, always start with clean, dry skin. Next, apply a barrier repair moisturizer to your skin before your Halloween makeup. The moisturizer will form a barrier between your skin and the makeup, helping to avoid clogged pores, dryness, and irritation. Look for oil-free moisturizers and cleansers if your skin is on the oily side or prone to breakouts.

3. Cleanse and Cleanse Again

The most important rule of Halloween makeup is to always wash it off before you go to sleep that night. Otherwise, you risk waking up looking scarier than you did the night before in costume! Even better, do a double cleanse to get rid of heavy makeup.

Start with a heavier cleanser to remove the majority of your makeup. You can use an exfoliating cleanser that contains glycolic or salicylic acid to ensure your pores are free of makeup, dirt, and oil before bed.

Finish with a gentler moisturizing cleanser to make sure all of the makeup is removed and to help hydrate and soothe your skin.

If your skin is still feeling dehydrated or dull the next day, treat yourself to a refreshing facial like the three-step HydraFacial to help revitalize lackluster skin that’s had a bit too much spooky fun.
