XEOMIN® vs. BOTOX® Cosmetic

Wrinkles are inevitable. It is likely that you already have some on your face around your eyes or on your forehead, or you may see that they are starting to form. That’s completely normal, and unfortunately, it’s a part of life. Wrinkles and fine lines form on our skin (primarily our faces) for two reasons. The first reason is that the wrinkles are caused by a loss of collagen in the skin, which often occurs in older men and women (as collagen production naturally slows down as we age); these types of wrinkles are called static wrinkles. The second reason that wrinkles form on our skin is from constant contractions of specific muscles, such as squinting or smiling; these types of wrinkles are called dynamic wrinkles, and dynamic wrinkles can occur to men and women of any age.

There are many different wrinkle reduction treatments on the market, and because of this, it can be extremely difficult to tell which procedure is right for you. The truth is that most facial wrinkles are treated in a similar fashion, which means that it can be up to you and your injection specialist to determine which treatment is the best.

At Sanctuary Medical Aesthetic Center, we are proud to offer both XEOMIN® and BOTOX® Cosmetic for wrinkle reduction of dynamic wrinkles. Both of these injectable treatments are comprised of botulinum toxin-A, which is naturally found in your body. However, it is important to examine each of these treatments to better understand how they help you with your cosmetic goals.

What Is XEOMIN®?

XEOMIN® is a neuromodulator that was developed to treat vertical frown lines that develop between the eyebrows. The XEOMIN® neurotoxin formulation (the acting ingredient in the injection) is purer than those found in other neuromodulators and does not contain any additives. The belief with XEOMIN® is that you are only receiving the necessary ingredients and proteins you need. XEOMIN® was FDA approved for use in 2010 and is designed to block the release of chemicals that cause the muscles to contract, thereby preventing repetitive facial expressions from leaving lines and wrinkles on the face. Essentially, the troublesome muscles that cause the dynamic wrinkles are temporarily paralyzed so that they cannot contract, which results in softened frown lines.

What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neurotoxin injectable treatment that helps to correct fine lines and wrinkles that appear around the eyes (crow’s feet), between the brows, and on the forehead. For this treatment, the BOTOX® Cosmetic solution is injected into the face to block any signals sent from the muscles to the brain. As with XEOMIN®, this temporary paralysis keeps your muscles from contracting and causing wrinkles in the skin.

Is XEOMIN® Better Than BOTOX® Cosmetic?

While this is a common question that many patients ask, especially when they are deciding which injectable treatment to have performed, the truth is that there is really no good answer to this question. Both XEOMIN® and BOTOX® Cosmetic are great options for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Luckily, at Sanctuary Medical Aesthetic Center, we offer both injectable treatments and can guide you with our expertise in the right direction after your thorough assessment. During your injectable consultation, our injection specialists will be able to examine and assess your wrinkles, your skin condition, and your health history, which will all be used to determine which neuromodulator would be best suited to you, your wrinkles and lines, and your goals for your facial aesthetic.

How Is an Injectable Treatment Performed?

Many people have the misconception that dermal fillers (such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and RADIESSE®) and injectable treatments (XEOMIN® and BOTOX® Cosmetic) are the same. However, not only are they different treatments (to correct different issues), but the injection process for each of these treatments is different. Dermal fillers are used to correct volume loss in facial skin, so the injection is made just under the skin. For neuromodulator treatments, the solution is injected directly into the muscle to block signals and stop the muscle from contracting.

Not only are injectable treatments effective, but they are relatively pain-free. And most injectable treatments can be completed in under thirty minutes, which means that you can get back to enjoying your life before you know it. Neither XEOMIN® nor BOTOX® Cosmetic offer permanent results, with each offering results that last approximately three to four months. However, continued maintenance treatments can keep your skin looking and feeling as smooth as you want for as long as you want.

Do I Need to Recover After My Injectable Treatment?

There is no downtime associated with neuromodulator injections; however, you may experience some redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection sites. These symptoms typically dissipate within about one week. It is important to note that you should refrain from strenuous activity (which includes exercise and lifting anything heavy) for 24 hours after your injection session.
