Located in Boca Raton and serving the residents of West Palm Beach and all of South Florida, Sanctuary Medical Center offers treatment for keloids and other skin conditions that require the assistance of a dermatologist.
What are keloids?
Keloids are growths of excess scar tissue where an injury has healed or scarred over. It is common for them to itch and be painful. Sometimes, if keloids occur over a joint, they can inhibit full range of motion. Keloids are often mistaken for hypertrophic scars; however, a keloid scar may grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound.
What causes keloids?
Keloids are typically caused by the abnormal healing of a wound where excess collagen and tissue build up. They occur most often at the site of acne, piercings, chicken pox, cuts, and other injuries or issues.
What are the most common treatments of keloids?
With keloids, we want the appearance of the scar to be diminished. One option is to use silicone dressings to minimize the keloids. Most often, we treat keloids with superficial radiation therapy. This involves using radiotherapy energy on the area for about 90 seconds. Other treatment options are chemotherapeutic and steroid injections and cryosurgery. Sometimes we use these along with laser therapy. Following an evaluation, we can make a recommendation for the most effective treatment.
