WHAT IS MELASMA?

Melasma is a very common skin disorder that causes a brown patchy discoloration on the face. Most commonly seen in women during their reproductive years, melasma is typically present on their foreheads, cheeks, upper lips and chins. Melasma is usually triggered by sun exposure, hormone fluctuations, birth control pills, or hormonal changes that arise out of pregnancy. Melasma is common in pregnant women, women who are exposed to the sun on a daily basis, or who are of Latin or Asian descent. Exposure to the sun is a major concern here in Florida.

HOW IS MELASMA DIAGNOSED?

Most often, melasma is simply diagnosed by a clinical examination and patient history.

WHAT ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS FOR MELASMA?

For many women who have melasma, the discoloration simply fades at the end of pregnancy or when discontinuing medication that affects hormones. For those whose melasma does not fade, laser treatments do a very good job of significantly diminishing and removing skin discoloration.

USING LASER TREATMENTS TO REMOVE UNWANTED BROWN PATCHES DUE TO MELASMA

There are several laser treatments available to treat melasma. By applying laser therapy to the brown patches, skin pigments break up and even disappear to leave smoother, clear skin.

ARE THERE OTHER TREATMENTS TO HELP DIMINISH MELASMA?

For those patients whose melasma is more difficult to treat, we may combine laser therapy with anti-inflammatory LED treatments as well as very mild glycolic acid and bleaching substances . We have seen great success in improving patients’ melasma with this combination of treatments as well as recommending appropriate use of sun protection.

HOW LONG DO TREATMENTS FOR MELASMA TAKE?

Melasma treatments vary depending on the extent of melasma and the best treatments prescribed. Following your initial consultation, we will be able to give you more details about the procedures, including anticipated time to complete them based on your individual needs.

WHAT IS THE COST OF MELASMA TREATMENTS IN BOCA RATON & FORT LAUDERDALE AND WEST PALM BEACH, FL?
