How Do Scars Form?
Scars are the result of the body’s natural mechanics to heal wounds. As a wound heals, collagen fibers form and then bond together to create a protective covering–a scar.
What Are the Different Types of Scars?
There are several types of scars that form, depending on skin type as well as the extent of the injury or wound that caused the scar. The most common types of scars are:
- Contracture Scars. These scars appear as burns heal. They are tight to protect the injured skin.
- Hypertrophic Scars. These scars are usually thicker and raised as they are formed from collagen that does not break down as the scar is formed. Over time, they regress and are always confined to the injury.
- Acne Scars. Usually the result of inflamed blemishes caused by skin pores engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria.
- Atrophic Scars. Atrophic scars are flat or may even cause a circular dent in the area where they form. These are usually the result of scarring acne.
- Keloid Scars. Keloids are raised scars that cover more than the injured area and are typically found on darker complexions.
How Do Lasers Treat Scars?
Though scars are never completely removed, laser treatments can minimize their appearance. The laser treatments with which we have the most success in removing scars are fractional resurfacing and Infini® or Intracel™ as they cause the least discomfort and result in no recovery time, allowing you can return to your day-to-day activities immediately following treatments.
Where Can I Receive Laser Treatments to Remove Scars?
Most parts of the body where you have a scar will respond well to laser treatments; however, your scar needs to be evaluated, so we can recommend the best treatment for you.
Are Laser Treatments for Scars Painful?
You may have some discomfort from the heat, but that is usually mild and short-lived. We can apply a topical anesthetic to alleviate any discomfort if necessary.
What Do I Do Following My Treatments?
You can usually resume most of your normal daily activities. We may recommend that you take it easy for a couple of days depending on the nature of the scar and the extent of treatment required to diminish it. Additionally, it is imperative that if you are out in the sun following treatments, you use a high SPF sunscreen.
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
The number of laser treatments to remove scars depends on the nature and extent of the scar as well as the recommended treatment method.
