What is nail fungus?

Onychomycosis, or nail fungus, is a fungal infection of the nail bed that attacks your fingernails and, most often, toenails. Nail fungus is first noticed by the yellowing or darkening of your nails along with thickening and crumbling. Research shows that between six and nine percent of the population have nail fungus infections.

What causes nail fungus?

The fungus that causes the infection is found in warm, moist environments and attacks the nail by direct contact with feet or hands. The fungi enters the skin through a tiny cut–such as where a nail has broken or cut or bitten below the quick.

Who gets nail fungus?

While nail fungus can affect anyone, it is more common with men than women, and is more likely to occur with those who:

  • Wear shoes like work boots that do not allow the feet to breathe
  • Are older in age
  • Are diabetic
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have compromised immune systems
  • Have athlete’s foot

CLEARSENSE™ for nail fungus treatment

Do you have nail fungus that has become painful and embarrassing? Nail fungus is typically treated with prescription medicine such as a topical anti-fungal cream or more often, an oral anti-fungal medication, however, they only treat the outer skin – not the soft nail bed underneath. ClearSense™ is a laser that heats the nail bed by destroying the underlying fungus and giving you clearer, healthier looking nails. It works for both fingernails and toenails affected by nail fungus. Though rare, surgery is sometimes required to remove the entire nail to let a new one grow in its place for more serious cases that have gone untreated for too long.

ClearSense nail fungus treatments are not covered by insurance.

Can I prevent nail fungus infections?

Nail fungus cannot be prevented, per se, but can be avoided by taking the following measures:

  • Dry feet after washing and before putting on closed toed shoes
  • Maintain proper hygiene of the feet and hands
  • Trim fingernails and toenails carefully so you do not cut them too far
  • Use clean and sanitized manicure and pedicure equipment
  • Do not share manicure and pedicure equipment
  • Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public bathrooms
  • Do not wear artificial nails as they trap moisture

What do I do if I think I have a nail fungus?

If you think you have a fingernail or toenail with nail fungus, it is important to seek treatment immediately. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, you can begin treatment so that the nail fungus is caught early and can be successfully treated in a shorter amount of time.
